NRI CERTIFICATE

Embassy of India continues to provide Miscellaneous Consular Services through Postal mail/shipping.

NRI Certificate will be provided only to Indian Passport holders. For non-Indian passport holders, having OCI card, NRI certificate will be issued only for admission to their family members in India at the Indian University under NRI Quota.

How to Apply:

Download the Miscellaneous Application form and fill it up carefully. Each applicant is required to fill up separate Miscellaneous Application form and affix his/her photograph on the same.

On the basis of the Indian passport held, applicants may submit a list of their entry/exit into/from India to confirm length of total stay in foreign country during a particular financial year (March to April). In case of any doubt, the case will be referred to the concerned agencies in India for clarification, which might delay issuance of NRI certificate. (Entry/Exit List Link)

Applicants with Indian passport may also submit an affidavit/declaration that they have stayed abroad for more than 182 days during a particular financial year (March to April).

Applicants will be issued NRI certificate as per Embassy format only. Applicants must provide a proof that a certificate is required for admission in Indian University under NRI Quota.

Notarized photocopies of first and last pages of Applicant’s current valid passport, and notarized photocopy of the document showing valid US Visa Status.

Notarized photocopy of any of the following documents as proof of residence: US Driving License, Utility Bill, Lease Agreement, State Identity Card or Mortgage Deed.

Photocopies of these documents may be attached with the application. Ensure that photocopies of these documents are legible.

Fee: A non-refundable fee of US$25.00 (Twenty-Five Only) and an additional fee of US$2.00 (Two Only) towards Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF) per application. The fees may be paid as two separate money order/cashiers’ cheque, drawn separately towards fee and ICWF, in favour of Embassy of India, Washington DC.

Processing time: Ten working days from the date of receipt of postal mail at the Embassy subject to submission of all requisite documents by applicants.

Please send in the application enclosing a trackable pre-paid self-addressed return mailing envelope to Consular Section, Embassy of India, 2536 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington DC 20008. Incomplete applications will be sent back indicating the requisites to complete those.

Owing to the growing spread of COVID19, it has been decided to stop the walk-in Miscellaneous Consular Services at the Embassy of India with effect from March 16, 2020. The services will continue to be provided through Postal mail/shipping.

How to Apply by Postal Mail:

Applicants while forwarding applications by postal mail for this service may send only notarized copies of Passport and address proof. No originals required to be sent by post. The rest of the directions remains the same as listed below
